Storyboat Editorial Team

Storyboat Editorial Team writes practical storytime guidance and story recommendations for parents. Our articles help you choose a story, enjoy reading aloud, and answer everyday bedtime questions. This is our publication byline; we take responsibility for the research and writing behind each guide.

Our research and writing standards

Our publishing process is to define a parent question, consult research and relevant professional guidance, write a useful answer with examples or optional activities, and check factual claims against their sources. We keep an internal record of the evidence used for material claims. References appear beside relevant claims and at the end of articles.

We prioritize systematic reviews, original studies, and guidance from relevant professional organizations. We distinguish a study of a particular intervention from a finding about all reading, and distinguish association from causation. Where we have only an abstract or summary, we limit our account to what it establishes.

Our guides offer general storytime ideas for families. For advice about an individual child’s development or health, a relevant professional can offer personal guidance. Specialist contributions, when included, are credited in the article.

What our examples mean

  • Research examples describe published studies, their participants, findings, and relevant limits.
  • Illustrative examples use invented situations or dialogue to demonstrate an idea. They show how an idea might look in an everyday conversation.
  • Family accounts, when included, require permission and protection of identifying information. We present these as individual experiences, alongside the wider research where relevant.

Suggested durations, conversation prompts, and home activities are our editorial adaptations unless explicitly attributed to a tested intervention. Age bands help parents find a starting point and adapt activities to their child.

Our relationship to Storyboat

Storyboat publishes this blog and offers the story library linked from it (you can read more about Storyboat and Windward Stories). Our recommendations explain a story’s premise, suggested ages, and why you might choose it. Research summaries describe the studies cited; recommendations are selections from our own catalog.

Articles and printable activities are available without an account. Each story page shows its current details and availability, with a preview to help you choose one to share.

Updates and corrections

We retain original publication dates and display an update date when an article changes substantively. Our editorial schedule includes a source and usefulness review at least every six months, and earlier when we learn of a material error or relevant change.

To report a correction, email hello@storyboat.app with the article link, the passage in question, and any supporting source. We use correction reports to review the relevant passage and its supporting sources.
